About
AMBER CHENG (CHENG PIN LING)
My work does not come from thinking or planning, but begins with bodily sensation and intuition.
During the process, I do not know what I am painting, nor what it will eventually become, and I move through a state of uncertainty where nothing can be predicted.
The only thing I can do is trust the present moment and enter flow.
Inspiration feels as if it naturally falls from the body, and action follows.
Intuition leads me to pick up the canvas, paint, and tools.
I keep my mind as empty as possible, repeatedly layering, scraping, destroying, and reconstructing. The image gradually emerges between structure and collapse, between control and loss of control.
Each layer is both a trace and a disappearance.
Painting is my way of “feeling alive.”
Through time, layers accumulate into traces of experience. Some disappear, some remain—like life itself.
The painting carries this process.
The moment of completion is a feeling.
Whether I like it or not at the moment, whether it looks good or makes sense, what matters more to me is staying truthful and pure, rather than intentionally correcting or pursuing a visually pleasing image.
To me, “completion” means wholeness, allowing the work to become what it naturally wants to be.
This unpredictable creative process always brings surprise, shock, and impact.
Life is the same—enjoy and experiencing everything within the unknown.
I am both the maker and the viewer.
When a piece is finished, I let it exist quietly for a few days, and see what it wants to tell me.
I do not know what you will see in the painting, but that is exactly what makes it interesting.
The world is rich because there are eight billion people, eight billion pairs of eyes, eight billion ways of seeing, eight billion sets of values.
Everyone is different. There is no right or wrong, no fixed standard. Nothing needs to be corrected, explained, or defined in order to exist.
Let perception remain in its purest form.
If you are willing, I would love to hear how you see the world.
